What kind of brace may I need for Scoliosis?

What kind of brace may I need for Scoliosis?

Scoliosis is a condition where an individual's spine curves three dimensionally; consisting of a side-to-side and rotational component. The most common type is idiopathic scoliosis. If it is detected while the spine is growing treatment may be indicated. The Gold standard for conservative treatment is hard shell custom bracing.

There are different types of braces. All come with various styles and philosophies to treat the condition and halt curve progression.

Orthobility Bracing provides two types of scoliosis braces:

Custom Gensingen Cheneau: Designed with a 3-dimensional body scan and x-rays. The information is sent to Germany and the brace is fabricated in Boston, USA. The shell is sent back to our shop to be fine-tuned & fitted on the client. Because this custom spinal brace is not made in Canada, it does not fit the criteria to be covered by government ADP funding. It may however, be covered under your private health insurance. The Gensingen brace is an over-corrective brace.

Custom Scoliosis Brace: Designed through a torso cast done on site & turned into a body mold of the client. The brace is crafted, fine-tuned and fitted on site. As such, it fits the criteria covered through the government ADP funding model. The client's portion would be 25% of the cost.

Both braces are effective, but are created differently. Make sure you are getting the brace best suited for your needs and funding model. Contact your private insurance and ADP (PH:416-326-6506) to get complete details on coverage for each, or contact our specialists to get details.

Sport Bracing

Nothing ruins a golf game more than an injury. Whether it is damage from a day on the course or from some other sort of activity or accident, it's difficult to fully enjoy and perform when you have one or many aches and pains. Be it an ankle, knee or hip injury, they all affect your performance.  Whether it is a wrist, elbow or shoulder problem, your swing is just not right nor comfortable to feel and perform your best. Then, there is the dreaded back pain. Many of us have it in some form or another, but it is how we deal and manage it, which determines how well we can perform.

Many people reach for pain relief in the form of a oral or topical pain killer, muscle  relaxant or anti-inflamatory drug. This may provide a partial solution and temporary relief, but to get complete recovery that lasts, the combination of a trip to your physio or massage therapist and a properly fitted support is your best course of action. A good support, be it custom or semi custom can significantly  reduce pain and increase performance. Combined with a simple treatment plan is a surefire way to have you back on course ASAP.

A perfectly fitted brace or support from Orthobility Bracing will go a long way to better health and a lower scoring game. Make sure to enjoy you summer and summer activities to the fullest, with a quick tune up from your favourite therapy partners, Orthobility Bracing and Mississauga Physiotherapy & Orthopedic Center.

Foot Orthotics

Foot Orthotics

Foot Orthotics

A foot orthotic is a device that can be discretely inserted into a shoe to support, allign, prevent and/or accomodate foot abnormalities and in turn, improve how the foot functions.

Used in conjunction with the proper footwear, a foot orthotic can be effictive in helping treat a number of foot and lower limb problems , including:

HEEL PAIN

ARCH PAIN

FOREFOOT PAIN

SHIN SPLINTS

KNEE/HIP PAIN

BACK PAIN

To ensure you are getting the proper treatment from your orthotics, avoid purchasing Orthotics in the following scenarios:

1. Dispensers who do not have the capacity to modify the orthoses themselves. This may suggest a lack of training or ability to fit propoerly.

2. Orthotics purchased from exhibits, trade shows or expos. How do you get follow up , if needed?

3. Someone trying to sell custom orthotics to somoene under the age of 5 years. The body is still developing and many of the bones and muscles afected are need to develop without the assistance of a devce like this.

4. Practioners who take no interest in your footwear. the orthotic and footwear combination are very important in the final result.

5. Outlandish deals for purchasing the orthoses. 3 for 1 or free footwear with the orthotic purchase could be a result of an inferior product.
